“His Faithfulness – My Shield”
By Heather Hanton
“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” —Psalm 91:4
I love Psalm 91. I’ve read it 100’s of times. Like many other scripture passages it speaks to me in new ways each time I read it.
Something you may know about me is that I love birds! I have a bird feeder in my backyard that I can see from my office window. I glance up at it to see so many different birds come to partake of the birdseed.
I’ve always been intrigued by their color…have you ever looked at a blue jay up close? Their tails have a checkered pattern on them! It amazes me how much time God took to design each bird – from the most colorful oriole down to what we may consider to be just the “drab” brown wren. To me, they are all beautiful.
Have you ever looked at a bird’s wings up close? They are so amazing!! Each feather perfectly shaped, colored, and layered to provide just the right aerodynamics as they fly, or protecting their young from predators, yet they are so soft to the touch and provide warmth and gentle cushioning as they care for their eggs or build their nests.
Psalm 91 reminds me that God is both my shield and rampart, both warrior and Father, both mighty protector and tender refuge. In Him we find strength to face what is before us, and in Him we also find rest for our weary souls.
A shield is close to the body. It is personal and immediate, protecting us in the heat of battle. A rampart is large and encompassing, surrounding and securing a city from outside threats. Together, these words reveal the completeness of God’s protection—He is near enough to guard my heart and mind in the moment of attack, and vast enough to surround my life with His unfailing love.
But God is also my tender Father. He covers me with His feathers, like a bird gathering its young beneath its wings. This is the beauty of God’s care. The One who fights for me also bends low to shelter me. His strength is never separated from His compassion.
He sees me as my El Roi, and He is my El Shaddai – almighty and all sufficient. Yet He cares for me as my Jehovah Rohi – my shepherd who loves His lamb.
God loves you! He doesn’t only shield us from what is harmful; He draws us close so we can experience His presence. Protection in the animal kingdom is about survival. But in God’s kingdom it’s about belonging. When we are under His wings, we are not only safe, we are loved. His shelter is not cold stone walls but the warmth of His embrace.
This truth is especially important when we feel exposed, vulnerable, or uncertain about the future. The shield reminds us we are never defenseless. The rampart reminds us the enemy cannot breach God’s walls. And the Father’s wings remind us that we are wanted, cherished, and held.
What also speaks to me from Psalm 91:4 is that yes, God’s wings of protection cover us…I don’t know what God looks like, if He has wings or feathers…I know the Psalmist was trying to paint a picture here…but it is His FAITHFULNESS that truly provides the protection.
I love the NLT version of Psalm 91:4
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
God’s faithfulness is what I will always need…that He is who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do…that He is with me always, and I can trust Him in the “even if”.
God is faithful. You can trust in His promises. You are guarded on all sides, and you are gathered close. The same God who shields you in battle also whispers peace over you in His faithful embrace. You are safe, you are loved, and you are His.
