Knowing God

Many people believe that if they live a good life, do good things, or even go to church they know God and will go to heaven. The truth is there is nothing good in us without God. We can’t earn our way into heaven. Eternal life is a free gift, offered to us by God who loves us. We believe that there is only ONE way to receive this free gift.

How can you get to know God and receive the free gift of salvation? First, you should understand how God feels about you.

1. God loves you and has a plan for your life.

God created you. Not only that, He loves you so much that He wants you to know Him and spend eternity with Him. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Jesus came so that each of us could know and understand God in a personal way. Jesus came to reconcile us with God and to give us life in all it’s fullness, including eternal life. We can not have eternal life without Jesus.

2. All of us were born with sin and our sin separates us from God.

Because of our sin we are distanced from. The Bible tells us that “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23). Without forgiveness we maintain our sinful nature, and remain separated from God.

BUT because of God’s great love for us, He provided a way to bridge the gap of separation…

JESUS

3. Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sin for us.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Jesus, who had no sin, took all of our sins, suffered and paid for them with His life on the cross. Jesus died for us, in our place. It was His sole purpose for living to reconcile us with God.

God’s love for us is so deep that He provided the way to Him through Jesus.

The Bible says, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4)

4. We must accept Jesus as our Savior.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

We accept Jesus by faith, believing He is the Son of God.

The Bible says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

When you accept Jesus, you believe that He is the Son of God, and you invite His Holy Spirit to guide and direct your life.

The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

YOU CAN RECEIVE CHRIST

You can receive Christ right now. You don’t have to wait until you are “cleaned up” or trying to live a better life. God sees you exactly as you are and loves you no matter what.

But God will not force His love and forgiveness on you. He waits patiently for you to take the step toward Him. Jesus says, “I’m standing at the door and I’m knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” (Revelation 3:20)

Would you like to receive Christ? Here’s how:

PRAY. Prayer is simply talking to God. It’s a conversation. The precise words you use are not important. He knows the intentions of your heart. If you are unsure of what to pray, this might help you put it into words:

“Jesus, I want to know You. I admit that I have sin in my heart. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You died on the cross for my sin. Please come into my life and forgive me. Help me to live my life to honor You and become the person You intended me to be. Give me faith to trust in You. Amen.”

If you sincerely asked Jesus into your life just now, then he has come into your life as he promised. You have begun a personal relationship with God.

But don’t stop there!

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38)
